How to Talk about War with Children

A document with tips to help explain war to kids

The Amsterdam Committee for 4 and 5 May, the organisation commemorating wars and celebrating freedom, published a document with tips for talking about war with children. I designed and illustrated this document, creating the different images used throughout.

The opener is a girl bombarded by shocking images from the media. This can make children very anxious, especially at a younger age when they tend to fantasize more. On the second page a boy visits a commemoration, hand in hand with an adult. The final page is illustrated with a fantasy setting, a visual idea from a child, where children get to speak to military and political leaders.

Find the (Dutch) document at the website of the Amsterdams 4 en 5 mei comité.
