Uncovering a Hidden Past

Illustrated scenes for an archeology book

For the archaeological book Culemborg's Hidden Past, the challenge was to reintegrate real, excavated artefacts into their original settings. Visualising an Iron Age clasp inside its ancient hovel, or a medieval pitcher in the middle of a working field.

To avoid historical speculation and debate over unprovable details, the client requested a suggestive approach. By focusing on light, silhouette, and texture rather than rigid architectural details, these scenes evoke the spirit of the Bronze Age, Roman settlements, and medieval life while leaving room for the imagination.
