Dungeons & Dragons Fantasy Cartography. Inspired by historical medieval cartography, this map was designed to feel like a diegetic artifact, as if created by an in-universe cartographer rather than an all-knowing illustrator. Instead of modern geographic precision, the design embraces the guesswork, oversimplifications, and stylistic biases of real historical maps. Great inspiration was drawn from the Hereford Mappa Mundi, an incredible medieval map of the known world.
Key locations and settlements feature detailed miniature vignettes. These serve as visual anchors for travellers, and provide a peek into regional cultures and local landmarks.
Hand-Drawn Typography
All lettering was drawn by hand to match the dark fantasy setting. I pulled inspiration from Carolingian and medieval script, aiming for a distinct style that would stay clear and legible amidst the busy details of the map.
