De Stad Moet PlatWeb graphic novel on 1941 Amsterdam's stand against oppression


De Stad Moet Plat (Shut Down the City) is an interactive, web-native graphic novel detailing the historic general strike of February 1941. Led by dockworkers and public transport staff, the citizens of Amsterdam organized the only mass protest against the persecution of Jewish people in Nazi-occupied Europe.

Designed specifically as a digital scrollytelling experience, the story unfolds vertically as the user scrolls. To engage a modern audience, the artwork steps away from dusty black-and-white historical imagery in favor of a bold&#38;nbsp;color palette. This is paired with scroll-triggered sound effects to fully immerse the reader in the tense atmosphere of occupied Amsterdam. This project showcases the final illustrations and the creative process of translating history into a fresh digital narrative.

    Victory or DeathAn illustrated revolutionary life&#38;nbsp;

I was commissioned to create&#38;nbsp;illustrations charting Che Guevara's&#38;nbsp;entire life path. From his early childhood years, to the revolution in Cuba,&#38;nbsp;up to his final days and death.&#38;nbsp;This project showcases the key illustrations designed as striking chapter headers to provide the book with visual anchors.

	Propaganda-Inspired Aesthetic
To match the revolutionary spirit of his life, the visual direction relies on a stark, high-contrast palette and a woodcut-inspired aesthetic. Taking cues from the propaganda art, I kept the color scheme intentionally limited. Red serves as the dominant color, most prevalent&#38;nbsp;in times of passion or conflict. It is&#38;nbsp;balanced by blue for contrast and tension. A military green and bright yellow are&#38;nbsp;used more sparingly, for effect.

Despite severe asthma, Che repeatedly attempted to climb Popocatépetl, Mexico’s second-highest peak.

	The Utrecht ArchivesAnimated medieval tales
The Utrecht Archives, or Het Utrechts Archief, had something to celebrate, for their sizable collection of medieval texts had been entirely digitized.
For the occasion, they wanted to highlight three stories from these documents. One about Utrecht being granted to its first bishop Willibrord, a second one about the craftsmen that toiled to built the Dom church, and a final one about the church obtaining a holy arm bone. The result is a colourful video with art inspired by medieval manuscripts.

    Zij Waren de EerstenWorld War II resistance online graphic novel
Zij Waren de Eersten: Geuzenverzet 1940-1945 is an illustrated narrative about simple people that resisted the nazi occupation of the Netherlands in the early years of the Second World War. Their actions were brave, but they quickly discover that resisting such an regime comes with great danger.&#38;nbsp;In the graphic novel we&#38;nbsp;read, watch, and experience the story of this&#38;nbsp;first Dutch resistance group through multiple characters, each telling their part of this history.What does it take to make someone resist? Do you act alone, or as part of a group? The educational program associated with the graphic novel makes the history of the Geuzen human and relatable for young people, helping them connect its meaning to their own lives today.

    73 PercentAnimations for a Holocaust documentary

73 Procent is a documentary by Jaap van Eyck that explores why the Netherlands had the highest percentage of Jewish victims in Western Europe. The personal story of journalist Max Arian - who survived the war in hiding - forms the emotional backbone of the film. Since such stories were never captured on camera, illustration played a key role in bringing these memories to life.
&#38;nbsp;

I was responsible for the visual design: sketching out the storylines, creating the illustrations, and animated key sequences myself. The amazing team at Moldybyrd Studio supported the animation process, helping me to bring the full story to life.

Editorial illustration on how pro-colonial bias still shapes history

For BMGN -&#38;nbsp;Low Countries Historical Review's essay on how successive generations of historians have written about Dutch colonialism, imperialism and decolonization, I illustrated the idea rather than the history itself. A 17th-century Dutch official, framed by a colonial jungle, disgorges an endless scroll from his mouth. Both the primary sources from the colonial period and much of the history written about it since carry a pro-colonial bias. This bias&#38;nbsp;still shapes how we interpret the facts today.
